Syfy is looking to produce comic book TV projects by adapting Frank Miller’s Ronin and Oni Press’ Letter 44.
The Hollywood Reporter (THR) is reporting that Syfy will produce DC’s 6-issue comic series Ronin as a potential miniseries. From Warner Horizon Television and DC Entertainment, Ronin was written and drawn by Frank Miller (Sin City, 300, and The Dark Knight).
The comics were published in 1983-84 and centered on a legendary warrior — the Ronin, a dishonored, master-less 13th century samurai — who is mystically given a second chance to avenger his master’s death.
In 1998, Darren Aronofsky was linked to a feature film project on the Ronin subject matter for New Line Cinema. Then in 2007, Gianni Nunnari, a producer on 300, announced that he would be producing with Sylvan White directing the picture.
THR described Syfy’s adaptation as “…[taking] place 8 centuries after a Japanese Ronin samurai failed to protect his master from a demon. He awakens in a futuristic, nihilistic New York in the body of Billy, a medical experiment. Now Billy/Ronin is chasing the demon, which had reawakened. Both parties want control of a sword with magical properties and will stop at nothing to get it back.”
Ronin adds to a long line of DC Comics properties currently on or coming to TV next season — among them, The Flash on CW, Constantine on NBC, and Gotham on Fox, just to name a few.
No writer has been announced and there is no indication of the exact number of episodes for the miniseries.

Meanwhile, the Syfy is also developing Oni’s Letter 44 as a series, which would be based on Charles Soule‘s ongoing monthly series that launched in October 2013. Terminator 3‘s director Jonathan Mostow will write the script, executive produce and direct the pilot. Mostow has previously had a chance at a comic book property when in 2009, he directed the flop The Surrogates.
Oni Press describes Letter 44 this way: “There’s something up there. As newly elected President Stephen Blades reads the letter left for him in the Oval Office by his predecessor, he learns this stunning secret: seven years earlier, NASA discovered an alien construction project in the asteroid belt. A crew of heroic astronauts was sent to investigate, and they’re nearing the conclusion of their epic journey.”
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World‘s Eric Gitter and Peter Schwerin (The Flock) will exec produce via their Closed on Mondays banner. Terra Nova alum Rene Echevarria is also on board to exec produce the Universal Television and Universal Cable Productions co-production.
This will be the first production of Oni Press comic to come to TV but, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World was the first Oni Press adaptation released back in 2010. IMDB.com also lists another Oni title, Queen & Country, as currently in development.
Formal announcements about both projects is expected to come during Syfy’s upfront presentation on April 30, 2014.
