In a preview clip for an upcoming Supergirl episode, there was a not-so-subtle Lobo reference dropped in it that makes us wonder if the Main Man will be making his first live-action appearance soon.
In the first of three preview clips from the next episode, Truth, Justice and the American Way, an armored man known as the Master Jailer, is kidnapping and killing aliens. Hank Henshaw/J’onn J’onzz (David Harewood) suggests that it could be an interstellar bounty hunter to which Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) asks about a specific “him” and John says “If he were in town, we’d know.”
It’s pretty obvious that they were referring to Lobo in that clip. In the DC Universe, Lobo started off as a villain but soon became a fan-favorite antihero/bounty hunter whose hulking, massive biker look, ultraviolent tendencies, and colorful catchphrases became his signature calling cards. In the New 52’s version of Lobo, the hulking biker had been replaced by a toned down version of the character who has not been as well received as his pervious iteration by the fans.
So far, this just seems like a throwaway easter egg line for the fans just like the “Men of Steel” or “Dark Knights fall” line from Legends of Tomorrow was which obviously alludes to Superman and Batman. At the moment, the creators of Legends of Tomorrow don’t seem to have any plans for introducing those characters into that universe so it’s likely that Lobo might also not appear in Supergirl either.
Although if Lobo were to appear at some point in a future episode of Supergirl, would it be the classic version of the character? The New 52 version? Or a version of the character that the show runners create exclusively for the show just like how Deathstorm from The Flash barely resembles his comic book counterparts? Whichever version of Lobo that they do decide to go with, it would be interesting to see just what they would do with the Main Man in his first live-action appearance.
Supergirl: Truth, Justice and the American Way will air on Monday, February 22 at 8PM on CBS.
