Today continues ADVANCE SCOUT, where each week here at Capeless Crusader, we select a group of creator-owned and major release comic books which are deserving of our readers’ attention. These books represent some of the best work being offered in the comics industry this week.

Enjoy!

Lumberjanes Gotham Academy #1

“Lumberjanes Gotham Academy #1”
(w) Chynna Clugston-Flores
(a) Rosemary Valero-O’Connell
Boom! Studios
$3.99

The crossover everyone has been waiting for has finally arrived!  Mixing the acclaimed comic from Boom! and the sleeper hit from DC Comics these two groups of characters were made for one another!

The Lumberjanes are a young group of campers that experience supernatural occurances at their summer camp with charming and hilarious results.  Meanwhile Gotham Academy follows a group of kids attending the titular school in the Batman universe with protagonist Olive being the daughter of a c-list villain and her “friend” Pomeline finding them involved in the Academy’s numerous ghost-sightings.

Written by Chynna Clugston-Flores and drawn by Rosemary Valero-O’Connell, the two crews are drawn to the woods to investigate strange happenings, but are soon drawn together in what is sure to be a crossover that you won’t forget.  Fun and appropriate for kids of all ages, this book is great for fans of both (or either) series and also a great introduction for those who have yet to dip their toes in the water.

NEXT: Action Comics #957

“Action Comics #957”
(w) Dan Jurgens
(a) Patrick Zircher
DC Comics
$2.99

Dan Jurgens returns to the Man of Steel as Action Comics reverts to its original numbering (starting from all the way back in 1938) with the iconic kryptonian earthling.

This issue kicks off the post-Rebirth world where Lex Luthor is now the Superman of Metropolis in the abscence of their other-worldly protector. However, when the real Superman returns to the city its not long before he and this “Super Luthor” meet up and even shorter before the new Clark Kent arrives!

This is the first (of many) Rebirth universe DC comic books that is going to flood into comic shops this summer.  With the New 52 it was a giant influx of books all at once leaving readers unsure of where to start and forcing DC afficianados to shell out loads of cash every week.  Rebirth doesn’t look to be much better with the new mainline books starting as twice monthly and coming in hot and fast.

One thing is for sure though, with a veteran of the Kryptonian wonderboy on Action Comics is one any DC or Superman fan should grab up.

NEXT: Invader Zim #10

“Invader Zim #10”
(w) Dennis Hopeless
(a) Dave Crosland
Oni Press
$3.99

Anyone who was growing up in the mid-nineties and was into indie comics will tell you about Johnny the Homicidal Maniac.  Actually, if you were leaving high school or attending college at the time you probably knew at least one guy who would tell you all about it (wether you liked it or not).

The creator of that “seminal” work was Jhonen Vasquez.  He would then go on to create one of the best cartoons of the early 2000’s with Invader Zim.  Well, last summer that show was reignited with Invader Zim #1 from Oni Press.  With the blessing (and input) from the creator the book came out and captured everything magical about the show.

Now with issue 10 all-star Dennis Hopeless is writing and this issue is sure to draw back in any fans of Vasquez’s work and be a great time for everyone, fans or not.

NEXT: Birthright #16

“Birthright #16”
(w) Joshua Williamson
(a) Andrei Bressan
Image Comics
$2.99

We’ve reached the first post-Vol. 3 issue of Joshua Williamson and Andrei Bressan‘s fantastic (in both the literal fantasy setting of the story and the quality of the work that these creator’s are putting out) comic series.

Birthright is the story of a young boy who was lost in the woods one day only to return years later as a grown man.  As it turns out, he was transported to a fantasy world that would make J.R.R. Tolkien blush.  As the hero of the realm that was foretold to come he saves their world. However, when he finds his way back into our world and reunites with his family, not all is happiness and sunshine as his family has been torn apart by his departure and he may not be who he claims after all!

With this new story arc alliances will be challenged, but can these characters ever recover from what’s now in the past, or is the future already written by the pain that has come before?  If you haven’t checked out Brithright yet make sure you pick up the trades and then grab issue 16, but remember to buckle up for the ride!

NEXT: Rachel Rising Vol. 7

“Rachel Rising Vol. 7”
(w) Terry Moore
(a) Terry Moore
Abstract Studios
$16.99

If you’ve never read Terry Moore before you’re doing yourself a huge disservice. Responsible for classics like Strangers in Paradise and Echo, Terry Moore has been (for most) an under-the-radar master for many years.  His newest (relative) masterwork is Rachel Rising, which when laid out simply is the story of Rachel who woke up one day…dead.  Sort of.

After being brutally murdered in the woods Rachel came back to life only to discover that her whole life is not what it seems and that’s the least interesting thing about this book!  Terry Moore has always had a Quentin Tarantino way of focusing on his characters more than what is going on around them, however the plot is fast paced and action packed and will keep you hooked from issue one.

These books don’t tend to stay in high circulation so get your hands on all the volumes to catch up now because you won’t want to miss this book.

Thanks for reading this week’s Advance Scout! If you liked the choices, or thought we left something remarkable off of the list, sound off in the comments!

See you next week!

I've been a comic book reader for as long as I can remember and a fan even longer. Spider-Man, Super Sentai and The Legend of Zelda are just a few of my favorite things.
