SUICIDE SQUAD officially rated PG-13

Following the success of Deadpool, rumours began circulating that other films would be aiming to capitalise on the same audience that seemingly longed for a R-rated comic book film. In the months following its release, Deadpool had broken almost every record imaginable for R-rating films, so it wasn’t surprising when it was announced that the final Wolverine film would aim for a R-rating. However what caused the rumour mill to run amok was the announcement that there would be a special R-rated cut of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice added to the home release of the film. 

This led people to believe that Warner Brothers might be aiming for a R-rating for Suicide Squad. While these rumours have been muted in the coming months, following statements from both director David Ayer and producers on the film that it would only get a PG-13 rating, any remaining hope of an R-rated cut for the film were crushed today when the MPAA officially handed Suicide Squad a PG-13 rating.

Ayer has also confirmed that the film won’t receive an R-rated cut for home release either, as the film was always aiming for a PG-13 rating. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he explained “For an R movie, you have to decide to do it right out the gate, and that was never the case here. We were always going to hit the PG-13 rating.” He did, however, leave the door open for a bloodier adventure for the second film, adding in the same interview that he feels “It would be worth lobbying for” a more intense sequel.

Suicide Squad, which stars Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Will Smith, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, and more, is set to hit theaters on August 5th.
